Axed Corrie Star Chris Fountain Gets Second Chance After Shocking Rap

He was formerly axed from [/tvshowbiz/coronation_street/index.html Coronation Street] after a video of him rapping about rape and violence surfaced online. 
But Chris Fountain has been given a 'second chance' and will return to the small screen, despite the scandal that cost him his soap career with ITV. 
The actor, 30, will star in the channel's new series Girlfriends, after top TV writer Kay Mellor chose to hire him for the show, telling [ ]: 'He made a mistake, he can't pay for it all of his life.'

Kay, who is best known for shows such as Fat Friends and The Syndicate, has returned with another series for ITV in which she has cast Chris, Miranda Richardson and Zoe Wanamaker.

Speaking about Chris' addition to the cast, given his controversial past, she showed her support for the star and insisted 'there couldn't be anybody more sorry'. 
She said: 'I think everyone deserves a second chance. If he hadn't have told me, 'I was a stupid pr**k, he wouldn't have a job.'
Mellor added that she believes being 'blacklisted' following has Corrie axing has led to Fountain learning from his mistakes.

News of his addition to Girlfriends first came to light in July, earlier this year. Chris had announced the news on his private social media accounts, describing the day he began filming for his part in the series as 'special'. 
According to The Metro, Chris, who had battled with depression following his axe from Corrie, had penned: 'After being off the screen for a long, long time, I now have the opportunity to be back doing one of the things I love and I'm incredibly grateful. 
'Today is my first day filming ITV's new drama, Girlfriends by Kay Mellor. Time to get back in the saddle, as they say!'
Girlfriends is set to broadcast in 2018 and not much is known about Chris' role in the series as of yet. It tells the story of three women and follows their friendship as they struggle with being a modern woman of a certain age and the responsibilities that come with it.

Fountain's addition to the show comes four years after he was sacked from Coronation Street after video clips of him rapping about rape and violence while disguised in a Halloween mask emerged online in 2013. 
The acting talent posed as his alter-ego The Phantom in the video and in one distasteful clip, he had rapped: 'I will **** anybody up in the worst way, rape a b***h on her birthday.'
Others included references to bombing houses and stabbing people in the face with syringes. 
Shortly after the videos surfaced, ITV confirmed that Fountain had been sacked from Coronation Street. He had starred on the soap as Tommy Duckworth between 2011 and 2013, where his onscreen character had dated Michelle Keegan's former Corrie character Tina McIntyre.

In a statement, ITV confirmed: 'Chris Fountain's contract with ITV has been terminated as a result of the unacceptable comments he made in a number of online clips. 
Mortified' Fountain had issued an apology and said he is 'deeply ashamed' of the YouTube videos, claiming the explicit lyrics were 'blurted out in a moment of madness'.
He said in a statement: 'I would like to sincerely apologise for any offence I have caused. I am deeply ashamed by the lyrics and very much regret my behaviour.
'The videos were made over a year ago when I was experimenting with music and I've not done anything like it since and nor will I,' said the actor, who said he accepted ITV had 'no choice' but to end his contract.
Fountain first rose to fame as Justin Burton in Channel 4 teen drama Hollyoaks between 2003 and 2009, before taking part in Dancing On Ice and finishing as a runner-up on its third series.
